Balance Brewing & Blending – “Land and Lore”

THE CHALLENGE
​
Balance Brewing & Blending, known for their nuanced, mixed-fermentation beers, commissioned an identity for their “Land and Lore” release—a series rooted in the natural, unpredictable process of fermentation. The challenge was to create a visual language that reflected the tactile, time-based nature of the product while standing apart from typical craft beer aesthetics.

THE APPROACH
​
Inspired by the poetic slowness of the brewing process, I chose to work with cyanotype printing—a hands-on analogue method where images develop through light exposure. Each cyanotype was made using found botanical material, echoing the organic unpredictability of the beer itself.
The visual identity balances this raw, textured imagery with a minimal, type-led framework. Typography was kept clean and functional to contrast the expressive nature of the cyanotypes. A limited colour palette of deep indigo and natural whites evokes the landscape and slow alchemy behind the product.

THE OUTCOME
​
The final identity system feels crafted and elemental—striking a balance between experimentation and restraint. Printed across bottle labels, promotional ephemera, and event collateral, the work speaks to the brewery’s ethos of patience, process, and place. It invites drinkers into a quieter, more intentional narrative—where design reflects not just product, but philosophy.
